Carol Gomez Scholarship
The Rev. Carol Gomez (1950-2002) was the first Black woman ordained by the American Baptist Churches of the Rochester Genesee Region and a tireless worker for human rights. Serving as pastor and chaplain in her vocational career, Carol was honored by Nazareth College in 1992 as one of the Celebrated Women of African Descent who had made significant contributions to the Rochester community.
What is this scholarship?

One Rev. Carol Gomez scholarship of $1000 is awarded each academic year to a Black woman who has demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to pastoral ministry and who is enrolled in the Master of Divinity program at the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, New York.
Who is eligible?

Preference is given to applicants in good standing with a church in good standing with American Baptist Churches of Rochester/Genesee.

Preference is given to applicants in good standing with the West Avenue United Methodist Church, Rochester, NY, or with the United Church of Marion, Marion, NY (ABCNYS)

Preference will be given to applicants who have not received the scholarship previously.

Applicants must be called to pastoral ministry (church leadership).

Any others may apply. One scholarship is awarded each academic year. If the scholarship is awarded during Cycle 1, applications received during Cycle 2 will be considered during the following Cycle 1.
Application and Deadlines

Two application cycles per year.

Cycle 1: Deadline June 1; notifications by August 1, checks released upon notification.​
